7 Powerful Prayers for Your Pastor Husband

By Katie Orr

As wives to pastors and church planters, we carry a holy calling to pray for our spouse. Here are seven Scripture-based prayers we can pray on behalf of our husbands.

My husband carries the great responsibility of shepherding God’s people well. He prepares the sermon for the week, visits the sick and home-bound and is even found climbing the roof of the church to mend something flapping in the wind.

He prays for his people. He carries the great responsibilities of husband and father. He makes us laugh, provides for us, prays for us, cooks often and endlessly serves with a willing heart.

As wives to pastors and church planters, we carry a holy calling. A pastor-husband needs our love, honor, support and attention — and he desperately needs our prayers.

Here are seven Scripture-based prayers we can pray to God on behalf of our husbands:

1. Pray your husband would be given the strength he needs to fulfill his mission.

Pray: “Mighty God, grant my husband courage and the ability to find His strength in you. I pray he would not fear nor be dismayed and He would remember You are always with Him. Holy Spirit, strengthen him with power his inner being.” (Ephesians 3:16; 6:10, Joshua 1:6-9)

2. Pray your marriage would be strong.

Pray: “Jesus, show my husband what it looks like to love me as you loved the church. Help me to love and serve him with a submissive and respectful heart.” (Ephesians 5:25-33)

3. Pray he would thrive in his ministry and personal life.

Pray: “I pray as he ministers to others, he would be rooted and grounded in your love for him. Please provide friendships that will sharpen and encourage him as he pours out to others.” (Ephesians 3:17, Proverbs 27:17)

4. Pray he would have great wisdom as he leads.

Pray: “God grant him the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation. May he always fear you, receive instruction in wisdom, and honor through humility. Please provide wisdom through friends and mentors he can walk alongside.” (Ephesians 1:17, Proverbs 15:33, Proverbs 13:20)

5. Pray you would always have a thankful heart toward your husband.

Pray: “Lord, I thank you for my husband. Grant me a heart of thankfulness for him that transcends every season, so that in every moment I would not cease to give thanks for him.” (Ephesians 1:16)

6. Pray he would have a fruitful walk with God that overflows into his ministry.

Pray: “Holy Spirit, fill every crevice of my husband’s heart with the fullness of you. Enable him to keep in step with your every move, and to crucify the desires of his flesh. Bring great fruit in his life as he obeys and depends on you.” (Ephesians 3:19, Galatians 5:16-25)

7. Pray God would be his safeguard from the enemy.

Pray: “God, make my husband sober-minded, watchful, and clothed with your protective armor, that he may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (1 Peter 5:8, Ephesians 6:11-18)
